Solar Scam: Saritha Nair ‘paid two Congress leaders’

Nair says money was paid to Behanan in 2011 as contribution to the party fund, and to Vishnunath in 2012

Thiruvananthapuram: Team Solar director and an accused in the solar power scam, Saritha S. Nair on Tuesday claimed she had paid money to two more Congress leaders in Kerala.

Her newest allegation comes even as the Congress-led United Democratic Front government in the state is battling to save its face from a series of bribery allegations, most of them raised by Nair herself.

In her latest revelation, Nair deposed before the Solar Commission that she had paid Rs500,000 (Dh27,014) to Congress leader Benny Behanan and Rs200,000 to P.C. Vishnunath.

Both are well-known Congress leaders, close to chief minister Oommen Chandy.

Nair said money was paid to Behanan in 2011 as contribution to the party fund, and to Vishnunath in 2012.

She said she had also paid several other leaders, but admitted that she could not provide any proof for the payments. Congress leaders have all refuted her claims.

Nair told the Justice G. Sivarajan Commission that is probing the solar power scam that she could reveal some personal details if the panel could hold a private sitting.

She, however, was not sure whether she could also share with the commission a multi-page letter she had written during her time in jail.
