She married her sister's husband after she died a year ago
A woman in Punjab, India, committed suicide soon after marrying her late sister’s husband.
The incident happened in Barnala district in Punjab, following a major mental breakdown and depression the woman suffered, according to a report on an international news website.
The deceased woman, identified as Navdeep Kaur belong to Bahadur city. She reportedly struggled with her illness and was going through treatment in Patiala. She died on October 3 in the hospital.
Due to an agreement reached between her father and the village council, Kaur married Sunny Bhatia, the husband of her sister, Mehak, who died a year earlier.
Bhatia was married to Mehak, nine years ago and the couple had an eight-year-old son together.
The marriage took place because someone was needed to take care of the boy.
However, things went south after Kaur and Bhatia’s family did not get along. Her father, Budharam, said that she returned to his house after there was a fight at her in-laws’ house.
Since then, she had been living at her paternal home waiting for Bhatia to come and collect her. Instead, he soon sent a legal notice of divorce.
According to the report, this triggered Kaur’s depression and led to a nervous breakdown, eventually leading to her death.
Her suicide sparked outrage amongst her relatives and her father. Her family alleged that it was due to her husband and his family that the two sisters passed away.
The family went to Bahadur police station to file an initial case against the Bhatia family on July 28, 2019. However, little action was taken.
A police case has now been registered against Bhatia and several members of his family.
