India rolls out initiatives designed to boost both domestic and international tourism
The Maha Kumbh, one of the world’s largest and most significant religious gatherings, is not just a spiritual occasion — it’s poised to be a global tourism platform. To mark this momentous event, the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, is rolling out several initiatives designed to boost both domestic and international tourism.
WHAT IS MAHA KUMBH? Held once every 12 years at one of four sacred locations in India, the Maha kumbh is a massive religious congregation that attracts millions of devotees, pilgrims, and tourists. The 2025 edition, the Poorna Kumbh, will take place in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, from January 13 to February 26, 2025.
This grand event presents a unique opportunity to showcase India’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage, alongside its immense tourism potential, to a global audience.
INCREDIBLE INDIA PAVILION: The Ministry of Tourism is setting up a grand 5,000 sq. ft. Incredible India Pavilion at the Mahakumbh. This space will cater to foreign tourists, scholars, researchers, photographers, journalists, the expat community, and the Indian diaspora. Visitors will enjoy an immersive experience that highlights India’s vibrant culture and the spiritual significance of the Kumbh Mela.
The pavilion will also feature the Dekho Apna Desh People’s Choice Poll, inviting visitors to vote for their favorite tourism destinations in India.
DEDICATED TOURIST INFOLINE: To support the influx of international visitors, a dedicated toll-free Tourist Infoline (1800111363 or 1363) is now operational in 10 international languages and several Indian languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, Assamese, and Marathi. The service aims to provide assistance, information, and guidance to ensure a smooth and enriching experience for all attendees.
SOCIAL MEDIA BUZZ: In anticipation of Maha kumbh 2025, the Ministry has launched a vibrant social media campaign to spread the word. Hashtags such as #Mahakumbh2025 and #SpiritualPrayagraj are being used to engage people and encourage them to share their experiences, creating a virtual global presence for the event.
CURATED TOUR PACKAGES & LUXURY ACCOMMODATION: In collaboration with key tourism partners like the Uttar Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation (UPSTDC), IRCTC, and ITDC, the Ministry has introduced a variety of curated tour packages and luxury accommodation options for attendees. ITDC has set up 80 luxury accommodations at Tent City, Prayagraj, and IRCTC is offering luxury tents to accommodate the expected influx of visitors. These packages, along with detailed itineraries, are available in a digital brochure distributed through Indian Missions and India Tourism Offices.
ENHANCED CONNECTIVITY FOR SEAMLESS TRAVEL: The Ministry has also partnered with Alliance Air to enhance air connectivity to Prayagraj from multiple cities across India. This collaboration ensures smoother travel options for domestic and international visitors, making it easier to access the event.
CAPTURING THE GRANDEUR To make the most of this historic event, the Ministry will undertake a large-scale photoshoot and videography project to capture the spiritual and cultural essence of the Maha kumbh. The visuals will be shared across both national and international media platforms, showcasing the grandeur of the event and highlighting Prayagraj’s potential as a leading spiritual and cultural tourism destination.
Maha kumbh 2025 is set to be an unforgettable celebration of faith, culture, and tourism, offering an unparalleled experience for millions of visitors from around the world.
