Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala assembly witnessed uproarious scenes on Tuesday as the Opposition United Democratic Front MLAs vociferously demanded the resignation of health minister K.K. Shailaja, on the ground that she allegedly violated norms in appointments to the Child Rights Commission.

The Opposition demanded the health minister’s resignation and massed in the well of the House, shouting slogans for her ouster from the state cabinet.

Opposition MLAs were on their feet from the morning when question hour started, holding placards and shouting slogans. “The health minister must resign or the chief minister must oust her from the cabinet”, shouted the Opposition MLAs.

The MLAs then staged a walkout from the state assembly.

Meanwhile, five Opposition MLAs — N. Shamsuddin, T.V. Ebrahim, Eldos Kunnappally, V.P. Sajeendran and Roji M. John — continued their day-night protest demanding the resignation of the minister.

In support of the five MLAs who are on protest strike, the Opposition has decided to hold rallies in all 140 assembly constituencies of the state.

The allegations of misuse of power and nepotism against the health minister comes at a time when the Left Democratic Front is already feeling the heat over the muddled admissions to self-financing medical colleges.

The government also got a rap from the state high court which wondered whether the government had no concern about the future of prospective medical students.
