Dubai: One more person became the victim of mob lynching in India last week. Twitter user @shahaa440 posted a video of a young man being brutally thrashed by a group of people on Friday. He wrote: “He is my friend... doing MBA (Masters in Business Administration) in Bangalore, His name is Farooq, [he] became a victim of mob lynching on September 13 at Tharoijan, Manipur, India... was tortured inhumanly... We want justice sir @narendramodi @NBirenSingh @rajnathsingh...”
According to media reports, a senior police officer said that the man was lynched in Imphal West district of Manipur allegedly for stealing vehicles. According to the newspaper The Hindu: “The incident took place at Thouroijam Awang Leikai area on Thursday, Imphal West Superintendent of Police (SP) Jogeshchandra Haobijam said.”
The video also shows a uniformed personnel witnessing the incident. Tweeps were quick to question as to why he did not take any action.
@jahfaljaseel posted: “Shame... This is not good. Police watching an injured person without doing anything? Inhumane... allowing the mob to take the law in their hands. But this is not good for a democracy.”
According to news outlet India Today: “Manipur Police have registered a case under IPC sections 302, 117 and 34 and have arrested five people.” The Manipur Human Rights Commission has suo motu taken up the case and directed the Director General of Police to probe the matter and submit a report by September 22.
While many showed sympathy for the victim, some Twitter users like @darshank022 highlighted that the case was still under investigation and the man who was beaten could be guilty. The tweep wrote: “I suggest readers wait for the true story before jumping to conclusions.” Many replied saying that mob violence was not the way to tackle crime or any situation.
Twitter user @amoffa50 wrote: “It is not for public to do this! India is on the world stage, portrayed as a country of law and order open for business. Mob rule that practice judge and jury tactics with police in attendance is anarchy.”
Twitter users are appalled at the growing incidents of violence in the country.
@gautamnishant posted: “What is this country turning into, why have people become monsters, what has happened to my India? Is India badly sick...? India needs help, someone strong.”
And, @_Shabb7777 threw light on other similar issues India was facing: “Honour killings (caste), mob lynchings, rapes, gang rapes, child rapes, rupee all time low, fuel all-time high, white collar crimes, unemployment, stupid leaders and puppet media. What is happening to my country?”
