The body of 24-year-old Tanu Singh (also known as Tannu Kumar), who had been missing for nearly two months, was exhumed from a pit outside her in-laws’ house in Faridabad’s Roshan Nagar on Friday, according to a PTI report.

Tanu hailed from Shikohabad in Uttar Pradesh’s Firozabad district and had been married to Arun Singh of Faridabad for less than two years.

What led to the discovery of her body?

Police recovered Tanu’s decomposed body from a 10-foot pit dug under the pretext of drainage work. The pit was covered with a concrete slab shortly after she was allegedly murdered in April.

Her father, Hakim, had raised suspicions about the spot during an earlier visit but claims police initially ignored his concerns.

Father-in-law confesses to killing

Tanu’s father-in-law, Bhoop Singh, has confessed to killing her on the night of April 21-22 by strangulation. He later buried her in the pit outside their home. According to police, he committed the crime when his wife Sonia and son Arun were not at home.

Was the murder covered up?

After the murder, Bhoop Singh reportedly filed a missing person’s report on April 25 and told neighbours she had gone to the market. The family also described Tanu as “mentally unstable” in the complaint.

Witnesses said an earthmover was used to dig the pit on April 23, and a mason was hired to cover it the next day.

What was the motive behind the murder?

Police suspect dowry harassment. Tanu’s sister Preeti alleged that she had returned to her maternal home within months of the wedding due to mistreatment and only went back after a panchayat intervention. “They wouldn’t even let her speak to us on the phone,” she said.

Who else is under investigation?

Four members of the Singh family — Bhoop Singh, his wife Sonia, son Arun, and daughter Kajal — have been named in the FIR. While Bhoop and Arun have been arrested, Sonia and Kajal are absconding. Raids are ongoing to locate them.

Probe underway

ACP Rajesh Kumar Lochan confirmed the murder and said further investigation is ongoing to determine the roles of other family members. Tanu’s body has been sent for forensic tests to confirm the time and cause of death.

Faridabad Police continue to investigate the case while the arrested accused are being interrogated. Tanu’s remains were handed over to her family after a post-mortem at Badshah Khan Civil Hospital.
