Patna: A man in Bihar, who has been in love with his mother-in-law, married her on Wednesday, ignoring strong objections and protests from the society.

The wedding took place at Dhamdaha block in Purnia district, more than 350km east of Patna.

The man, identified as Suraj Mahto, a resident of Puraini village in neighbouring Madhepura district, was initially married to Lalita Devi one-and-a-half-years ago. The couple had a son together.

The twist in the tale came recently when Mahto fell ill seriously and subsequently, her mother-in-law who lived alone at her home in Purnia district came to see her ailing son-in-law.

In due course, both fell in love. The affection got so intense that both would talk for hours over the cell phone. If that was not enough, the man began frequently meeting her mother-in-law after she returned to her home.

When the matter reached Mahto’s wife, she tried hard to convince her mother to stay away from her life but she refused. The hapless wife even requested her father who worked in a factory in Delhi to intervene. He too tried hard but in vain. The local villagers also objected to their “unholy” relations but nothing worked.

Eventually, they eloped on June 1 and tied the nuptial knot at a local temple. On Wednesday, they finally reached a local court, and filed a formal affidavit in the court as a formal solemnisation of their marriage.

The newly-wed woman, however, says she has no objection to staying together with her husband’s first wife, her own daughter.
