Thiruvananthapuram: A woman in Kerala’s Kollam district was stabbed to death by a man who had proposed marriage to her daughter after a courtship on social media.

The 27-year-old man, identified as Sathish from Madurai in Tamil Nadu state, travelled to his lover’s home in Kulathupuzha in Kollam district to request for her mother's permission so they could marry.

When the girl’s mother, Marykutty Varghese, refused Sathish allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed her. Marykutty ran out of the house screaming, and collapsed by the side of the road. She was rushed to a hospital, but succumbed to her injuries.

Sathish attempted to flee the scene, but onlookers caught him and handed him over to the police. The police also took into custody Sathish’s companion, Chithira Selvam, who had accompanied him from Madurai to Kulathupuzha.

Marykutty’s husband, P.K. Varghese, is based in the Gulf and the couple have a younger daughter studying in Bengaluru. At the time of the incident, Marykutty was alone at home.

Sathish had befriended Marykutty’s elder daughter, who is working in Mumbai, on social media, and had been requesting permission for their marriage.

However, in recent weeks Marykutty’s daughter had not been responding to calls from Sathish and had reportedly told him that her family was looking out for a suitable groom for her.

On Tuesday, Sathish reached his girlfriend’s home, and reportedly gained access into the house by pretending to be a courier delivery man intending to hand over a package.

When he repeated his request to marry her daughter and Marykutty refused, Sathish reportedly pulled out a knife and stabbed her. Local media reported that Satish had reached Kulathupuzha, thinking that his girlfriend had also reached her home from Mumbai.
