Thiruvananthapuram: Close on the heels of Jolly Joseph, 47, being accused of murdering six of her husband’s family and relatives in Kollam district, a middle-aged man in Kollam district in south Kerala is accused of murdering his mother and quietly burying the body.

The accused, Sunil Kumar, has been arrested while his friend, Kuttan, who is believed to have been an accomplice in the crime, is on the run.

Sunil Kumar is accused of murdering his 72-year-old mother, Savithri in the first week of September.

The incident, which happened at Pattathanam near Kollam, came to light after Savithri’s daughter told local police on September 12 that her mother had not been seen since September 5. Ironically, Sunil Kumar also registered a similar complaint.

Police later took Sunil Kumar into custody, and he confessed to the crime during questioning, local media reported. Sunil Kumar is an accused in another murder case, too.

Local residents said Kumar is addicted to liquor and drugs and he used to make demands on his mother's  pension earnings and physically assault her.

After taking him into custody, police searched the house premises on Sunday morning and found Savithri’s body buried near the septic tank in the house compound.

The body will be sent for post mortem and then given to family members.

In the case of Jolly Joseph allegedly murdering her husband and five others of his family, police believe it was a desire for independent and luxurious living that prompted the crimes.

In the Kollam incident, too, the initial assessment is that the septuagenarian mother was allegedly murdered by her son to take over her property.
