In a politically charged move, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI-M] on Friday announced M. Swaraj, a former legislator and prominent youth leader, as its candidate for the upcoming Nilambur Assembly by-election, scheduled for June 19.

This marks the first time since 2006 that the CPI-M is fielding an official party candidate in Nilambur, a move seen as a strategic decision by Chief Minister Vijayan amid early signs of mobilisation for the 2026 Assembly elections.

The bypoll was triggered by the resignation of sitting MLA and Left-supported independent P.V. Anvar in January, following a fallout with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Anvar’s sudden exit had caused ripples within the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF).

Swaraj, 46, is a native of Malappuram district and a member of the CPI-M’s state secretariat. Known for his oratory and political acumen, he gained attention in 2016 by defeating senior Congress leader K. Babu in Tripunithura. However, he lost the seat in a tight race in 2021.

CPI-M state secretary M.V. Govindan described the Nilambur contest as a “serious political battle,” adding, “We are confident of victory. This constituency has always shown strong support for the LDF, and Swaraj enjoys wide acceptance here.”

Govindan also sharply criticised Anvar, branding him a “traitor” and alleging that he is now seeking to align with the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF).

The Congress has nominated Aryadan Shoukath, son of eight-time Nilambur MLA and senior leader the late Aryadan Mohammed, setting the stage for a high-stakes political showdown.

A defeat in Nilambur could potentially dent the LDF’s momentum and complicate its path to a third consecutive term in office.
