New Delhi: Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday took a swipe at Bharatiya Janata Party’s “Main Bhi Chowkidar” campaign, stating that if people want their children to become watchmen, they should vote for Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the upcoming national elections.

“If people want their children to become ‘chowkidar’ (watchman), they should vote for Prime Minister Narendra Modi but if they want their child to get good education and become doctor, engineer or lawyer, they should vote for Aam Aadmi Party,” AAP chief Kejriwal said in a tweet in Hindi.

He said PM Modi wanted the whole country to turn into ‘chowkidars.’

Last week, Modi had asked his supporters to take the ‘Main Bhi Chowkidar’ (I too am watchman) pledge, referring to his role in protecting national interest and fighting graft.

As a sign of solidarity with PM Modi, several people added the prefix “chowkidar” to their Twitter handles. Almost all top BJP leaders, including union cabinet minister and CMs of some BJP-ruled states, added ‘chowkidar’ to their Twitter name.

Later Modi congratulated all those who supported the campaign on social media.

“My best wishes to all you ‘chowkidars.’ Very pleased with your enthusiasm. Owing to your watchfulness, corruption is on the wane and thieves are feeling the pain,” Modi tweeted on Monday.

Meanwhile, political analyst Rajiv Malik lamented Kejriwal’s sense of dignity of labour.

“What is Arvind Kejriwal trying to say actually? He is mocking the profession of ‘chowkidars.’ Not just him, it is the entire Opposition which is making the same mistake that they made in 2014. BJP has already bested their ‘chowkidar chor hai’ campaign,” Malik said.

Political commentator Vivek Saksena went a step ahead and said Kejriwal misinterpreted the term ‘chowkidar.’

“What is the problem if someone becomes a ‘chowkidar?’ Are ‘chowkidars’ not doing social work? In fact, Modi’s meaning of ‘chowkidar’ is not in context of profession, but by attitude to keep vigil against wrongdoers, criminals, and anti-social and anti-national elements,” Saksena said.

Earlier, Congress had launched “chowkidar chor hai” (the watchman is a thief)” campaign, accusing Modi of corruption in the multimillion dollar Rafale fighter jets deal with France.
