Veteran actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) president Kamal Haasan officially began his journey as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha (Upper House) on Friday, pledging to be a strong and sincere voice for Tamil Nadu at the national level.

Haasan, who took the oath in the Upper House, shared a heartfelt statement on social media platform X, reflecting on the significance of the moment and expressing gratitude to the people of his home state.

A promise to uphold the constitution

“Today, as I rose to take the affirmation as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, I did so with a heart full of humility and a conscience weighed by responsibility,” Haasan wrote. “I have sworn to uphold the Constitution of India not as a ritual of formality, but as a solemn promise to serve its spirit with fidelity, courage, and conscience.”

Haasan, known for his iconic roles in films like Indian and Nayakan, said the moment belonged not just to him but to the people of Tamil Nadu, whose voices he promised to carry into the halls of power.

Championing Tamil Nadu’s interests

“I will strive to be the voice of Tamil Nadu in Delhi – clear, compassionate, and committed,” he said. “I will speak not for one community, but for the common good. Not for narrow gain, but for national growth. To the people who have walked beside me on this journey – I thank you. To those who doubt – I hear you. And to those who hope – I shall not let you down.”

Haasan has often spoken about reform and social justice through his political outfit MNM. He was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha on June 12, along with five others from Tamil Nadu.

A daughter’s proud tribute

Meanwhile, actor Shruti Haasan shared an emotional post on Instagram, celebrating her father’s milestone. Posting a touching photo of the two, she wrote: “My dearest appa, today marks the journey of your steps into a brave new world... watching you take your oath with your signature voice echoing through the chambers was a moment forever etched in my mind.”

She concluded her message with a wish for her father’s continued success: “As always I wish for you to be happy and achieve all you hope to achieve. Love always, always, always.”

With his entry into the Rajya Sabha, Haasan begins a new chapter – this time as a parliamentarian committed to representing the aspirations of Tamil Nadu on the national stage.
