Patna: A prominent college in Jharkhand has said it would dismiss girl students if they are caught taking selfies on campus.
The order was issued by the Graduate School College for Women, Jamshedpur, one of the oldest degree colleges in Jharkhand, on Saturday. The college which offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in all three streams of arts, commerce and science has been running since 1971.
“All girls are strictly banned from taking selfies on the college campus. If they are caught taking selfies, they will soon be handed out College Leaving Certificate (CLC),” says a printed notice issued by the school principal Dr Satyarupa Srivastava.
The college administration, however, claims the order was issued to prevent any untoward incidents in future. According to the administration, girls were found jostling for selfies by sitting on railings of the colleges on the first and second floors of the college building which was inviting accidents.
Authorities also said the rush among some girls to take selfies had been causing other students from not attending classes and focusing on studies, and hence they were compelled to ban selfies on the campus.
Last year, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) had issued a notice to the principal of Miranda House over a circular issued by the college imposing a ban on taking selfies and combing hair in its corridor. The DCW issued the notice after some students protested the move and approached the former, terming the ban order “misogynistic”.
In another interesting move, a women’s college in Jharkhand’s Daltonganj town has also banned girl students from wearing jeans and using cell phones on the campus to “promote a sense of equality” between rural and urban students. The order was implemented by YS Namdhari Women’s College last year.
