Haridwar, July 16: In a remarkable show of devotion, a group of Kanwar Yatris from Gurugram are drawing attention in Haridwar by carrying an enormous 800–1,000 kg golden Kanwad on wheels, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Crafted meticulously in Sonipat, the elaborate Kanwad contains around 40 litres of sacred Gangajal and is part of their 250-kilometre spiritual journey.

“This is a unique Kanwad, made in Sonipat and holding 40 litres of Gangajal. People are appreciating its grandeur,” said Sonu Rana, one of the yatris.

The Kanwar Yatra, which began on July 10, is an annual pilgrimage where devotees—known as Kanwariyas—collect water from the Ganges and walk long distances to offer it at Shiva temples, especially during the holy month of Shravan.

Meanwhile, the Uttarakhand government has intensified efforts to protect the sanctity of the pilgrimage through “Operation Kalanemi,” targeting individuals who disguise themselves as religious followers to exploit devotees.
