Hyderabad: In a surprise move Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) president and Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has fielded former Prime Minister PV Narsimha Rao’s daughter Surabhi Vani Devi as party candidate for the upcoming polls to the Telangana Legislative Council.

She will make her electoral debut from Hyderabad-Ranga Reddy-Mahbubnagar Graduates MLC constituency on March 14.

K Chandrasekhar Rao handed over the party nomination to Vani Devi on Monday leaving the Congress party leaders huffing and puffing.

Hyderabad-Ranga Reddy-Mahbubnagar constituency is presently held by N Ramachandra Rao of the BJP and he was trying hard to retain the seat.

In the other seat Khammam-Warangal-Nalgonda the TRS has re-nominated its sitting MLC P Rajeshwara Reddy and BJP was going all out to wrest the seat from the ruling party.

Vani Devi’s move of accepting TRS nomination came as a shock to many in the Congress party as PV Narasimha Rao’s family remained with Congress since his death in 2004.

Highest award

KCR on the other hand had been eulogizing Narasimha Rao on every possible opportunity and demanded the government of India to bestow country’s highest civilian award Bharat Ratna to “Telangana Bidda” (son of Telangana).

He also alleged that the Congress had humiliated Narasimha Rao by refusing to bury him in New Delhi and sent his body to Hyderabad for cremation.

Telangana State Congress working president Ponam Prabhkar alleged that the TRS had nominated Vani Devi for political reasons. “If she has any self respect she should refuse to accept the TRS nomation”, Prabhakar told the media on Monday.
