A man in India allegedly decided to film his wife while she committed suicide instead of stopping her.
The Incident took place in the district of Budaun in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday, October 29, according to an international news website.
The matter came to light after the maid filed a police complaint against the husband for filming the suicide. She also made a complaint against the deceased’s in-laws for demanding dowry.
Police have identified the deceased as Swati and the perpetrator as Govind.
According to the maid, the couple had only been married since May this.
The couple had an unhappy marriage and Swati’s in-laws regularly demanded dowry, a police investigation revealed.
The maid claimed that Govind saw his wife with a rope around her neck and the ceiling fan. Instead of stopping her, he allegedly filmed her taking her own life.
The maid said that he later shared the footage online.
Soon after the incident, neighbours came to know that Swati had died. When asked, Govind claimed that she suffered a heart attack.
However, the maid had a conflicting statement that was registered as a police complaint. It highlighted Govind and his family’s role in Swati’s suicide.
Senior Superintendent of Police explained that there was a suicide video circulating online and while he believes it was filmed by Govind, a thorough investigation will need to be conducted in order to prove it was him.
Despite registering a case, no arrests have been so far.
