Tiniest woman cast her vote

NAGPUR: Heads turned when the world’s tiniest woman, actress and Guinness World Record holder Jyoti Amge — who stands just 63cm tall — turned up to vote at a polling station in Nagpur on Thursday.

Sporting a red-checked sleeveless dress, the 25-year-old woman at 2 feet, 1 inch, patiently stood in the queue and exercised her franchise.

“I request all people to vote. Please vote first and then go to complete all your other work,” Amge told the media as she voter ink mark on her finger.

Amge, a celeb cook and entrepreneur, has appeared in Bigg Boss 6, acted in American and Italian television series and has her own statue in the Celebrity Wax Museum, Lonavala (Pune).

NaMo food packets create a furore

LUCKNOW: Distribution of saffron coloured food packets with ‘NaMo’ foods printed on them were distributed at a polling booth in Gautam Buddha Nagar on Thursday.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer Venkateshwar Lu has asked for a report on the incident from the District Magistrate.

Gautam Buddha Nagar SSP Vaibhav Krishna though has dismissed suggestions that the food packets were in any way linked to the Bharatiya Janata Party, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also referred to as “NaMo” in several campaign and advertisements.

“There is some misinformation being spread that some policemen have been given food packets from a political party. This is absolutely wrong. At local level, some food packets were procured from Namo Food Shop and not from any political party,” said the Krishna.

He said that there was a food outlet in the district known as NaMo Foods which led to the confusion.

A news channel, however, said that the food outlet had denied having supplied the food packets.

“We did not supply any food packets. Our shop is closed since Wednesday evening. We do not know about any order,” said a staffer of NaMo Foods.

Naidu demands repoll

AMRAVATI: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) President N. Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday demanded repoll in around 150 polling stations due to the non-functioning of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).

In a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Naidu identified more than 150 polling booths in Andhra Pradesh and said, “I demand conduct of repoll in all the above polling stations and such other polling stations where the polling has not commenced even at 9.30am due to the failure of EVMs.”

Earlier in the day, Naidu had expressed his unhappiness over EVMs not functioning in several polling booths. Maharashtra also saw some glitches in EVMS as some of its polling stations in Gadchiroli-Chimur constituency and Yavatmal-Washim resulting in long queues of voters in the blistering heat on Thursday.

SRH’s movie to encourage voting

NEW DELHI: As the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections began on Thursday, the government hinged on Shah Rukh Khan’s star power to exhort the electorate to exercise their franchise in the maximum numbers.

The Press Information Bureau (PIB), the publicity arm of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, used stills from Shah Rukh Khan-starrer “Mohabbatein” to send out the message emphasising the importance of voting in a democracy to build a better future.

The PIB posted on its Twitter handle a montage of three visuals from a scene featuring Shah Rukh, Uday Chopra, Jugal Hansraj and Jimmy Sheirgill along with the message: “Aaj election ka phela phase hai ... Tumhara aaj ek vote se desh ka kal badlega ... Go Vote (Today is the first phase of elections. Every vote counts for the nation to change. Go vote).”

In the film, the scene was about Shah Rukh convincing the students of the fictional educational institution ‘Gurukul’ to follow their heart and let it free.Tiniest woman cast her vote
