Dubai: Multiple locations in Jammu, including the airstrip, were targeted on Thursday night with rockets fired from across the International Border, marking a major escalation a day after India struck several alleged terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, reports in the Indian media said.

Parts of Rajasthan and Punjab were also targeted with rockets fired from across the International Border with Pakistan, marking a significant escalation just a day after India struck terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

One of the drones hit the Jammu airport, prompting fighter jets to scramble in response. India activated its air defence systems, which successfully intercepted the incoming rockets.

Shesh Paul Vaid, a former director general of police for Jammu and Kashmir, also wrote on social media that there were "loud explosions".

The security source, who was not authorised to speak to the media, could not give the cause of the explosions, but it came as India and Pakistan accused each other of carrying out waves of drone attacks, AFP reported.

In response, India activated its air defence systems, which successfully intercepted the incoming rockets.

Security agencies confirmed that eight missiles were launched from Pakistan targeting the Jammu civil airport, Samba, RS Pura, Arnia, and surrounding areas. All were intercepted by the S-400 air defence system.

Air defence units are intercepting projectiles and drones in Udhampur, Jammu, Akhnoor, and Pathankot, India Today said.

Air defence sirens were sounded around the Jammu airport and Pathankot Airbase, and a complete blackout was enforced in the area.

Mobile services were also disrupted across Jammu city. Several explosions were reported across the city.
