Thiruvananthapuram: The Supreme Court has recommended the creation of a committee to supervise the unearthing and preservation of Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple assets.
The move allays fears surrounding the safekeeping and preservation of the mountain of treasure unearthed at the temple so far.
The apex court called for the creation of a five-member panel headed by C.V. Ananda Bose, the director of the National Museum. Officials from the archaeological department and the central bank will make up the rest of the committee.
Inventory
The treasure find astounded the nation after an apex court-appointed committee carried out an inventory of the treasures recovered from the temple's vaults earlier this month.
The committee was not asked to value the assets, but media reports said a rough estimate of the contents of the temple's vaults made the temple the richest shrine in the world.
Taking note of such reports, the court yesterday directed the media to show restraint on reporting on the wealth of the temple.
The apex court has also directed the state government to provide adequate security at the temple.
