Patna: The Bihar Human Rights Commission (BHRC) today sought a detailed report from the authorities a day after a teenaged acid attack victim girl committed suicide by clutching a live electric wire with her bare hands. Police believe she took the extreme step out of depression after realising that none would marry her after her face was disfigured.

The victim identified as Madhu Kumari, 18, daughter of Chena Shah from Anwarpur village in Vaishali district, committed suicide late Sunday night by holding live electric wire while everyone in the home was asleep.

“We got suspicious when she did not come out of her room till late on Monday morning. When we broke open the door, we found her lying lifeless on the ground, clutching live electric wire,” victim’s father Shah told the media today, sobbing inconsolably.

Her family members said she was a bright girl who loved to study. But her life underwent a complete metamorphosis after a single incident.

“She was going to attend a private coaching in the vicinity when three youths tried to molest her on the way. She boldly resisted their attempt and raised an alarm after which the youths threw acid on her, burning her face beyond recognition,” said her father. The incident had taken place in September 2014.

She was rushed to a hospital and well she survived but her face turned uglier. Since then, she had virtually locked herself in her house and would not interact with others. However, she went into depression after the three accused persons who were sent to jail later came out on bail and began loitering in the locality in a n attempt to tease her.

Taking a suo motu cognisance of the case, the BHRC has in the meanwhile sought a detailed report from the district superintendent of police concerned and posted the matter for hearing on July 20.

“The BHRC has taken suo motu cognisance of the media reports about suspected death of an acid attack victim by electrocution in village Anwarpur, P.S.
