60 Hindu prisoners fast alongside Muslims in India's Tihar jail

Dubai: India’s sizzling summer heat was not tough enough for 60 Hindu prisoners who chose to fast this Ramadan in Tihar prison, Delhi.

Cramped inside one of India’s most crowded prisons, they fasted alongside Muslims.

According to Indian daily, Hindustan Times, each prisoner had different reasons to observe the fast. Some fasted for the betterment of their family, like a 45-year-old woman told jail officers she is fasting for the welfare of her son outside. While others simply chose to accompany their Muslim counterparts.

As the temperature is expected to rise in India, jail authorities said that necessary arrangements have been made. Prisoners are regularly served Ramadan’s traditional drink; Rooh Afza and dates and jail officials attend the iftar as well.

People were quick to admire the prisoners’ effort. Twitter user @ShaleenMitra said: “In the era of hate monegring, such news is a big relief. Hindu prisoners in Tihar are observing Ramzan [Ramadan] fast with their Muslim brothers. May the brotherhood and love continue to win, always...!!!”

Indian tweeps expressed their appreciation and chose to highlight the matter. User @salmanzafar1979 said: “This is the #GoodOldIndia…”

Facebook users also expressed their respect for the interfaith collaboration. Vijay Murkute commented: “Really a good act especially to be noted by politicians who divide people on the basis of religion. Tihar prisoners have proved religion is a peaceful unifying force among individuals and not a divisive force.”

The act received admiration from across the border as well.

Pakistani Facebook user Amer Lodi posted: “Whole hearted respect for these 60 individuals.”

Tweep @UroobaIshtiaq said: “Not a single religion teaches anyone to hate the other religion. Here is the proof: Hindu prisoners are fasting with the Muslim ones in an Indian jail. We need more such examples! #SpreadLove and #positivity.”
