Tremor hits northern Chile at 89 km depth after initial 6.5 estimate

SANTIAGO: The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) said on Monday a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck northern Chile, east of the city of Calama, Reuters reported.
The GFZ had earlier pegged the quake at a magnitude of 6.5.
The earthquake struck at a depth of 89 km (55.3 miles), it added.
Updates continue to emerge as local and geological authorities assess the impact and potential aftershocks.
