Dubai: Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Departments (DNRD) office in Dubai Courts will start cancelling the residency permits of workers involved in labour cases at the court itself without referring them back to DNRD headquarters.

This was decided following a meeting between them and the execution department at Dubai Courts.

A senior official said the move would help increase efficiency and save time.

He said the department would also withhold the amount of compensation in labour cases until the residency is shifted to the new employer or cancelled in order to protect the rights of the worker and the employer.

Egyptian businessman gets three year jail term for dud cheques

Dubai: The Dubai Court of First Instance sentenced an Egyptian businessman Nabil A. B. to three years in prison on charges of issuing dud cheques with bad intent.

The businessman, who has allegedly conned people in Egypt and the UAE and took more than $200 million (Dh734 million), was arrested in Dubai last February after Ebrahim K., an Egyptian national, filed a complaint against Nabil at the Bur Dubai police station claiming that he gave him a $6.12million (Dh22.48 million) cheque that had bounced.

He claimed that Nabil gave the cheque to him in December 2007 at his home in Jumeirah as a guarantee for investments.

The court is set to look into Nabil's case in issuing another cheque of $380,000 (Dh1.39 million) to Karaar with bad intent.

A Cairo criminal court sentenced Nabil in absentia to 15 years in prison last May on fraud charges and for “swindling $62 million (Dh227 million) from Egyptian citizens through his brokerage firm, Optima Security. His victims included football stars and politicians.
