Al Ain: A heavy downpour and thunderstorm yesterday (Wednesday) played havoc in Fujairah, Kalba and the neighbouring mountainous range when flash floods swept through them and inundated low-lying roads and areas.

The continuous unsettled weather also resulted in scattered showers in Dubai, Al Ain and some south-western parts of the country. Forecasters said more rain is likely in the next 48 hours, especially in the northern emirates.

High winds spattered rain on windows and doors in Fujairah. Some light structures were blown away. However, no casualties were reported until yesterday evening. Police sources said some of the roads in the mountainous region were damaged by the flood water.

Cars were seen moving through flooded streets in Kalba, Fujairah and the neighbouring areas on the East Coast.

“Heavy rain forced most of the vehicles to stop on the Fujairah-Kalba Road,” said Abdul Majeed, a Fujairah resident. Thick black clouds hovered over the horizon since the morning, he said.

Scattered rain also fell in Al Ain yesterday.

Strong winds also blew dust and sand in some areas. Motorists on the Al Ain-Al Waqan Road faced a tough time in dusty conditions when visibility dropped down to 300 metres.

According to the NCMS, the weather will be cloudy to partly cloudy today (Thursday) at times with a chance of scattered rain especially in the northern emirates.

Winds will be moderate in general but get stronger at times. Relative humidity will increase at night and early morning over some inland areas. The sea will be moderately rough in general, becoming rough at times in case of towering cloud activity.
