Dubai: Dubai residents will walk for three kilometres to partly endure the woes of thousands of children across the world who walk for hours to fetch clean drinking water.

‘Water Bucket Walk', which will be held on Friday at the Jumeirah Beach, is being organised by Dubai Cares, a UAE-based philanthropic establishment launched in September 2007 by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to improve children's access to primary education in developing countries.

The event, aimed at raising funds to provide children in developing countries with clean drinking water, marks the 20th anniversary of the United Nations' Universal Children's Day.

Every participant represents one child's access to clean water for one year and hence Dubai Cares encourages the UAE residents to participate in large numbers and help make a difference to the lives of the children across the world.

Organisers said the bucket, which participants carry, will only be filled with a bottle of water so that women and children of all ages can partake in the walkathon.

It will provide the UAE residents with an opportunity to briefly experience a fraction of the difficulties that children in developing countries face every day in accessing and collecting water.

The money raised from the walkathon will be used to provide children in developing countries with access to clean water. According to statistics, limited access to clean drinking water is one of the main issues preventing children's access to primary education.

The registration fee for the Water Bucket Walk is Dh30 and the registration will be open from 8am. The walkathon will begin at 9am.

Residents can also do spot-registration at the venue or register through the Dubai cares website www.dubaicares.ae
