Newly revamped centre unveiled on World Thalassemia Day to support thousands of patients

Dubai: In a community initiative marking World Thalassemia Day, Dubai Health has inaugurated upgraded facilities at its Thalassemia Centre, unveiling the newly renovated High Dependency Unit and Majlis Al Saada.
Thalassemia is a hereditary blood disorder that affects the body’s ability to produce haemoglobin, leading to chronic anaemia and fatigue. Common in the Middle East and South Asia, the condition often requires lifelong treatment, including regular blood transfusions and close medical monitoring.
Established 30 years ago, the centre provides medical treatment to around 9,000 patients every year, including citizens and residents across various age groups suffering from Thalassemia and other inherited blood conditions.
Over the past decade, 160 patients have undergone bone marrow transplants, reinforcing the centre’s position as a leader in Thalassemia care.
The centre also runs wide-reaching awareness programmes, offering educational sessions, school nurse training, social support campaigns, and year-round recreational activities to improve patient care and raise funds for essential equipment.
The enhancements in the facility aim to offer a more compassionate and comfortable environment for patients living with Thalassemia and other blood disorders.
The High Dependency Unit was redesigned to better serve patients requiring close medical monitoring and is now equipped with advanced technology in line with the highest international standards. Meanwhile, the Majlis now features a dedicated recreational area, a lecture hall, and a relaxation lounge.
The upgrade, supported by DP World, was made possible through the Al Jalila Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Dubai Health.
The revamped units were officially opened during a special event attended by Dr Amer Sharif, CEO of Dubai Health; Dr Amer Al Zarooni, CEO of Al Jalila Foundation; Dr Abdulla Al Khayat, CEO of Al Jalila Children’s Hospital, Ayoub Al Mulla COO of We One by DP World GCC, and Nabil Qayed, Executive Vice president – Corporate Support, Marwan AlJassmi, Senior Vice president, Alia Al Janahi, VP of HSE, Jill Lambert, Vice President Communications from DP World GCC along with several senior officials from both sides.
