Umm Al Quwain: Street dogs are being shot dead by police following a string of attacks on residents in the emirate, municipality workers said.

Around 15 dogs were killed around New Year after five incidents in which several residents were bitten by strays were reported in 2011, the workers said.

They added that the bodies were buried in a landfill. Residents said the problem centred around the old Shabiya area.

Last December, an Egyptian boy, 7, was set upon as he left his home for prayers in Shabiya. His teenage sister was also chased.

Other reports include an Emirati boy, 13, who was seriously wounded in a dog attack last July. Another boy and an Emirati youth were also attacked in 2011.
