Abu Dhabi: The Ministry of Health is in the process of signing an agreement to strengthen surveillance and diagnostic capabilities against bird flu (Avian Influenza Virus).

Ministry is to ink a deal with the World Health Organisation and the Naval American Medical Research Unit.

WHO has warned that recent outbreaks of bird flu could trigger a future human flu pandemic and that the UAE should take precautions against travelers coming from affected areas.

"There are no reported cases yet but in case of a pandemic catastrophe, the UAE must be prepared to service its nation with the required knowledge, shelter, food, medical services and recovery measures,'' said Dr John Jabbour, Medical Office, Emerging Disease, WHO eastern mediterranean regional office.
