Dubai: On Sunday, November 14 evening, several residents in the UAE felt mild tremors as the National Centre of Meteorology recorded an earthquake in South of Iran, measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale at 4.07pm.
The NCM, in a later update said: "Another earthquake was recorded with 6.7 magnitude on Richter scale in South of Iran at 4:08pm, UAE time, according to the NCM's National Seismic Network."
An NCM spokesperson told Gulf News, "National Seismic Network, recorded two earthquakes today Sunday 14/11/2021, in the same place ( Southern Iran) with 6.2 and 6.7 Magnitude Earthquake on Richter scale, at 16:07 and 16:08 consecutively "UAE time”, with the same depth of 10 km, and a distance of 200 km North of Ras Al Khaima City. It is slightly felt by the UAE residents without any effect.
"The cause of the earthquake is due to the tectonic movement on the Zagros Mountain Belt in Southern Iran."
According to UAE geologists, the earthquake risks are slightly higher in the northern and eastern parts of the emirates due to their proximity to the Iranian fault line.
Many UAE residents also reported that they felt slight tremors of the two earthquakes.
Gulf News reader Faisulla Khan, who was at his home in Abu Shagara, Sharjah at the time said: "Everything in the house was shaking including the hanging lights. We left our building and almost half the residents of the building had already come outside.”
Another reader Shruti Sharma who lives in Barsha, Dubai said: "I was at home and saw the water inside our water dispenser slightly moving and realised there was probably an earthquake."
Sangeeta Manglani, a Bur Dubai resident told Gulf News: "It was around 4pm and my husband and I were having tea at home. Suddenly the chairs in the house and the bed were shaking. My daughter who was working in the other room came out and said her bed was moving too. It continued for around eight to 10 mins."
Another Sharjah expatriate Nandita Iyer said: "I was speaking to my children as they had just returned from school when I felt myself slightly swaying in my chair. I could see my home curtains, chandeliers and wall-hanging moving back and forth in my 27th floor's Sharjah apartment."
