Infrastructure revamp supports smart mobility and enhanced commuter experience,
Dubai: Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed the comprehensive upgrade of 22 public bus facilities across the emirate, including 16 passenger stations and six major depots.
This development is a key milestone in RTA’s strategic initiative to modernise public transport infrastructure, elevate service standards, and provide residents and visitors with safe, efficient, and integrated mobility options.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, said the enhancements are designed to encourage greater use of mass transit by offering a more convenient and comfortable experience.
“This project is part of RTA’s ongoing efforts to reinforce Dubai’s public transport infrastructure. We aim to transform bus stations from simple waiting areas into fully integrated service hubs that improve the overall travel experience for all passengers including people of determination and cyclists while supporting seamless connectivity with the Metro and taxi networks,” Al Tayer stated.
Upgraded passenger stations
The project involved refurbishing 16 key passenger stations including nine in Deira and seven in Bur Dubai. Renovations included upgraded waiting areas, modernised façades, improved infrastructure systems, new pavements, and the addition of prayer areas at selected sites. These stations support 110 routes and handle up to 710 buses during peak hours.
Enhanced bus depots
Six strategic bus depots located in Al Khawaneej, Al Qusais, Al Ruwayah, Al Awir, Jebel Ali, and Al Quoz were also overhauled. Upgrades included revamped maintenance workshops, new lanes for inspection, state-of-the-art engine washing systems, improved lighting and drainage, upgraded driver accommodations, enhanced security infrastructure, and restructured parking layouts to mmaximiseoperational efficiency.
Connected mobility
This initiative aligns with RTA’s broader vision to integrate various modes of transport and support first and last-mile connectivity. By improving pedestrian pathways, installing bicycle parking, and enhancing access to public transport hubs, the project encourages sustainable commuting habits and easier access for all segments of the community.
The latest upgrades build on earlier station development projects at key locations such as Al Ghubaiba, Union, Al Jafiliya, Oud Metha, Al Satwa, Etisalat, Al Baraha, International City, and Dubai International Airport Terminal 3.
Modern bus fleet
The station enhancements are complemented by RTA’s investment in a state-of-the-art bus fleet that meets European “Euro 6” low-emission standards, regional first in the Middle East and North Africa.
The Authority recently signed a contract to add 637 new buses between 2025 and 2026, including 40 fully electric, zero-emission buses from Zhongtong, custom-built for the Gulf region.
The new buses include:
400 MAN city buses (12 metres, 86 passengers each)
51 Zhongtong city buses (12 metres, 72 passengers each)
76 Volvo double-decker buses (13 metres, 98 passengers each)
70 articulated Isuzu Anadolu buses (18 metres, 111 passengers each)
