Police have blamed a crash that killed three members of a Scottish family on the driver whose car ploughed into them.

Fred and Mabel Jamieson and their daughter-in-law Val, 45, died when their vehicle was hit by a car driven by a national.

Val's husband, Scott, 47, and the couple's 19-year-old daughter, Lyndzy, were both injured in the accident which took place on Saturday evening.

According to British press reports, the family was on a sand-dune safari at the time of the crash near the Dubai-Sharjah border.

Police said the family's car had entered the Al Habab roundabout after the Nazwa Mountain when a car carrying two UAE nationals crashed into it.

Fred, Mabel and Val were taken to Al Dhaid Hospital in Sharjah, while Scott and Lyndzy were taken to Dubai's Rashid Hospital before being transferred to the American Hospital.

Vicky Lee-Gorton, second secretary for political and media affairs at the British Embassy in Dubai, said officials were helping the surviving family members. Police said public prosecutors were looking into the accident with a view to taking action against the driver of the car that was to blame.
