Dubai: The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has kicked off a comprehensive series of awareness initiatives in support of GCC Traffic Week 2025, running from April 14 to 20.

Held under the unifying theme “Driving Without a Phone,” the campaign aims to tackle the dangers of distracted driving and reinforce safer road habits across the UAE.

Organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior, Dubai Police General HQ, Emirates Driving Institute, and Michelin Tyres, the initiative is part of RTA’s strategic commitment to reducing traffic incidents and enhancing road safety in line with Dubai’s Traffic Safety Strategy.

Dangers of distraction

RTA reminds drivers that using a mobile phone while behind the wheel carries a fine of Dh800 and four black points. The authority calls on motorists and users of personal mobility devices to remain fully attentive while on the road, helping to foster a culture of responsible and safe driving in Dubai.

RTA emphasised the urgency of this year’s theme, citing studies that show phone use while driving can impair reaction times as severely as alcohol consumption — by up to 80%. The ability to respond to sudden hazards is also halved when drivers are distracted by mobile devices.

Through its structured awareness plans, RTA targets all community segments, reflecting the “Awareness Pillar” of Dubai’s broader safety framework.

Activities this year will include:

  • A central exhibition hosted by the Ministry of Interior in Sharjah featuring public and private sector partners

  • On-site events at schools and universities

  • Digital campaigns across social media

  • Messaging across billboards, electronic screens, and RTA customer service centres
