Only 38 died on Dubai roads this year compared to 56 during same period last year
Dubai: A Dubai Police Traffic Department road-safety campaign has helped reduce fatalities by 32 per cent in the first five months of this year compared to the same period last year,
Major General Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Director of the Traffic Department, said there were 38 road deaths until the end of May compared to 56 during the same period in 2011.
“Dubai police recorded one death on the road in May compared to 11 in May last year, which is unprecedented,” he said.
The drop in road fatalities has been made possible by increased adherence to traffic laws by motorists and pedestrians.
“The drop in the death index is the result of extensive campaigns targeted at pedestrians who cross at undesignated places and reckless motorists,” Maj Gen Al Zafein said.
“In line with the department’s strategy to cut road deaths to zero per 100,000 residents by 2020, the department has also tasked a committee to study the reasons and timings of major accidents,” he said.
There were seven deaths in January, five in February, 15 in March, 10 in April and just one in May this year compared to nine in January, 12 each in February, March and April last year.
