The figure is the highest number of people ever to use public transport in a single day in Dubai.

Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), said the numbers using Dubai Metro, public buses and water buses on Free Public Transport Day fulfilled the purpose of the initiative and hailed it as a success.

Huge numbers

"The number of Metro riders reached 404,162 passengers on Tuesday while the number of public bus users clocked 286,960 passengers compared to 246,431 passengers on last Tuesday reflecting a 16 per cent rise. Some 2,099 passengers used water buses compared to 803 last Tuesday."

Al Tayer thanked the public as well as the government departments and educational institutions for participating in the Free Public Transport Day initiative and making it a successful event.
