More than 188 million passengers used RTA's public transport buses in 2024
Dubai: Dubai’s public bus network has reached a new milestone, now covering 88% of the city’s urban areas.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), revealed that the RTA’s public buses transported 188 million riders, a year-on-year increase of 8%, highlighting the impact of advanced technology, expanded infrastructure, and integrated transit solutions.
Expanded network
With a fleet of 1,390 buses operating across 187 routes, the public bus system now completes 11,000 trips daily, covering approximately 333,000 kilometres and serving more than 500,000 riders each day.
“RTA is committed to making public transport the first choice for daily commutes,” said Al Tayer.
“Our goal is to strengthen connections between residential, commercial, and industrial zones while ensuring seamless integration with the Dubai Metro, tram, and taxi networks,” he added.
Dedicated lanes
As part of its ongoing improvements, the RTA plans to introduce six new dedicated bus and taxi lanes spanning 13 kilometres, bringing the total length of dedicated lanes to 20 kilometres. This expansion is expected to boost passenger numbers by 10%, enhance bus arrival times by 42%, and cut journey durations by 41%, significantly reducing congestion across key routes.
In 2024, the RTA also introduced nine express bus routes, nine additional metro link services, and four new taxi routes targeting high-demand areas. Periodic route adjustments, based on data analytics and rider feedback, ensure continued service optimization. Details about new dedicate lanes will be announced soon.
Modern stations and buses
The RTA has rolled out a new generation of bus stations designed with smart systems and integrated transport features. These stations support pedestrian and cycling access, promote sustainability, and provide accessibility features for People of Determination.
Dubai’s buses themselves meet Euro 6 low-emission standards and include features such as low-entry boarding, designated spaces for passengers with disabilities, and enhanced comfort and safety systems.
Integrated network
RTA’s long-term vision focuses on a fully integrated, multimodal transit ecosystem. The agency continues to invest in developing road networks, public transport links, and first- and last-mile solutions, such as shared mobility services, bike lanes, and pedestrian pathways.
Through these initiatives, the RTA aims to reshape the city’s mobility culture, encouraging a shift from private car use to sustainable public and shared transport options, supporting Dubai’s broader environmental and urban development goals.
