Thuraya is all set to offer WAP (wireless application protocol) services on its mobile phoneset once commercial launch takes place, scheduled for July 1.

Having just launched services in Romania as part of a gradual commercial rollout, Thuraya will soon launch services in Qatar to be followed by Kuwait, a top company official confirmed, adding that Thuraya would enter at least 10-12 markets as part of the gradual commercial rollout prior to the actual launch of commercial services.

The new feature will be capable of operation over both the GSM and GEM networks. "Phone users requiring WAP service can approach the distributor of the country and upgrade the set," said Yousul Ali Al Saeed, CEO. "There is no additional charge, but if such a charge is made, it would be really minimal."

Qatar plan

Meanwhile, Thuraya will very soon launch services in Qatar, the first GCC state after the UAE where its services will be made available, he said. Kuwait is likely to be the next market in the GCC where a soft launch will take place.

Earlier this week, Thuraya launched services in Romania. A similar launch is scheduled for France shortly. Thus far, Thuraya has had such soft launches in the UAE, the UK, Italy, Sudan and Denmark.

All the systems, the set-up, SIM cards and related preparatory work are ready in Qatar and the launch is just a step away, said Al Saeed.
