Sharjah students pitch in for Palestinians

Over Dh773,000 was donated for Palestinians by pupils from the Sharjah Educational Zone during a campaign from April 6 to 10, said Dr Salem Saeed Ghubar, Head of the Campaign's Central Committee at the Zone.

Pupils and parents also donated large quantities of items such as food and blankets, he said. He praised the generous contributions of the pupils at government and private schools as well as the evening classes.

The huge support extended by schoolchildren and their parents, he said, embodied their solidarity with the Palestinians and their sufferings.

The campaign was carried out under the directions and follow up of the Ministry of Education and Youth and the UAE Red Crescent Society.

He said the campaign aims to enhance students' cooperation, solidarity and support to their Muslim brothers and sisters as well as instilling a sense of belonging to the Arab and Muslim issue.

Aminah Khalil, deputy head of the committee, praised the strong motivation which prompted members of the committee, school administrations and pupils to make the campaign a great success.

She said the work of supervision of the campaign was distributed among the various committees, which included a committee for government schools, with sub-committees for girl's schools and boy's schools, a committee for private schools and another for evening classes.

The committees, which included employees from the Zone, liaised between school administrations, handing out the Red Crescent coupons and collecting money on a daily basis.

Aminah praised the huge support extended especially by Abu Moosa school as less than a hundred pupils donated a total of Dh11,650.

The proceeds from the government schools totalled Dh373,993, with the highest amount of Dh21, 800 collected from Al Tala' Preparatory School for Girls.

Ahmad Mohammed Habib Msharbek, Head of the Private Education Department at the Zone, said that a total of Dh344,608 was collected from the private schools, with the American School of Sharjah's contribution of Dh50,175 on top of the list of donors.

Abdul Kareem Hajooni, Head of the Sharjah Evening Classes Centre, said that proceeds from the evening classes came to Dh55,246, with the Sharjah Centre contributing Dh23,798.
