Sharjah: A vehicle burst into flames in the Al Nahda area near the Sahara Centre at around 8am on Sunday morning, Colonel Khalid Bin Kanoon, acting Director-General of Sharjah Civil Defence, told Gulf News.

The incident caused a tailback on the road during the morning rush hour as motorists slowed down to watch the burning vehicle.

Firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control but the front of the car was destroyed.

Col Bin Kanoon said the incident has been handed over to Al Buhaira Police and the forensic laboratory to establish what caused the blaze.

He urged all motorists to periodically check their cars and ensure maintenance is carried out if necessary to avoid such incidents.

He said most fires that break out in cars are due to a technical fault.
