Residents claim the lack of a consumer protection body together with municipality inaction means they have no protection against the increasing price of products.
"We are still a long way off from getting such an association. The municipality is not helping us, traders keep increasing prices whenever they like, knowing there is no authority that can stop them," said Rashid Ali Al Beloutchi, a UAE national employee.
"The municipality plays a vital role in ensuring the hygiene and safety of consumable goods but does nothing about increased prices.
"It should, in cooperation with the Ministry of Economy and Planning, act to stop the increases especially after the recent rise in salaries," Abdullah Saeed, a UAE national said.
"Fujairah Municipality aims to protect the public by ensuring all commodities meet hygiene standards.
"Protecting consumers cannot be achieved unless the consumers themselves cooperate with us by reporting increased prices or poor quality products," municipality director Rashid Hamdan Abdullah said.
