Dubai Municipality has begun work on the Dh43 million Ras Al Khor Interchange project which is expected to ease traffic flow in the area.
Sami Al Hashmi, Acting Director of the Roads Department, said the work began last week and is expected to be completed by the middle of September 2002.
The project mainly consists of the construction of a new interchange at the Nadd Al Hammar Road (608) junction, the widening of the Ras Al Khor Road from three to four lanes and a two-kilometre extension of the Back Road to link with the existing Road 313.
"The full cloverleaf interchange will provide free flow movement for arriving and departing traffic from the interchange," Al Hashmi said. "It will provide proper connection to the adjacent road network."
The interchange will allow links for the Emirates Ring Road and the Al Awir road network with the Back Road, parallel to the Sheikh Zayed Road passing Al Quoz and Al Barsha on the way to Jebel Ali.
There will be another link for Defence Road to the Back Road through a flyover to ensure smooth traffic flow.
Once completed, the project will ease traffic to the Used Car Complex, the proposed Central Vegetable and Fruits Market which is expected to be operational by the middle of 2003, the Dubai Port Authority's customs storage area and the Dubai Bypass Road.
Al Hashmi said the project would include the construction of road signs, pavement marking, street lighting, irrigation ducts, diversion and protection of services such as electricity and water, telephone, sewerage, storm drains and irrigation systems.
