Dubai Police are ready to deal with any disturbances during the Dubai 2003 meetings of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, said a senior police officer.

"We will not be closing our doors to any visitors during the event," said Brigadier Nasser Abdul Razzaq Al Razooqi, Assistant Commander-in-Chief for Operation and Supplies Affairs. But any violence will be dealt with, he stressed.

Brig. Al Razooqi said people will be free to put forward their own views as the UAE is a country that respects freedom of expression.

"The police are ready and equipped to deal with any challenge during this event," he emphasised.

He said that the anti-riot unit at Dubai Police was formed in the 1970s and is constantly updated on the latest techniques in controlling unruly crowds.

According to Brig. Al Razooqi, the police are working with other departments such as Immig-ration, Civil Defence and the Coast Guard, in ensuring maximum security for the event.

"Delegations from the police have been visiting other countries in order to learn from their experiences in dealing with any problems that may arise during the meetings," he said.

Brig. Al Razooqi was speaking on the sidelines of preparations for the first Middle East Police and Law Enforcement Exhibition and Conference (MEPLEX).

It will be held under the patronage of General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince, UAE Defence Minister, and Head of Dubai Police and Public Security.

Considered a first of its kind event in the Middle East dedicated to the police and law enforcement sector, it will be held from October 6 to 9 at the Dubai Police Academy.
