Dubai: What began as a casual coffee shop conversation between two Filipino cyclists turned into a powerful display of unity, patriotism, and community spirit on June 7, 2025. Over 350 Filipino cyclists from 45+ teams across the UAE converged at Al Qudra Cycling Track for the very first Kalayaan Ride, a dynamic prelude to the 127th Philippine Independence Day.

More than just a bike ride, the Kalayaan Ride was a celebration of identity, heritage, and solidarity among Filipinos living abroad. Organized by Erwin Gutierrez, Arby Intal, and the 63.Mafia Cycling Team, the event came to life in just two weeks—fueled by passion, teamwork, and a shared vision of uniting the Filipino cycling community during the Eid holiday.

“We wanted to celebrate our freedom in a way that reflects who we are today—resilient, active, and united,” said Gutierrez. “And cycling has become a huge part of the Filipino lifestyle here in the UAE.”

The ride featured three route categories, each named after the major island groups of the Philippines:

·         Luzon Route – 80 km

·         Visayas Route – 100 km

·         Mindanao Route – 127 km, symbolizing the 127th year of independence

The early morning event was graced by Vice Consul Paola Ebora of the Philippine Consulate General in Dubai, who praised the organizers and participants for promoting Filipino culture and unity abroad.

Despite Dubai’s scorching summer temperatures, the ride was executed flawlessly with zero accidents, thanks to strict safety planning and enthusiastic cooperation from all participants. Organizers also offered free bike check-ups, hydration stations, Filipino food, and raffles sponsored by community partners—creating a festive, family-friendly atmosphere.

In an exclusive interview, Gutierrez, a shipping manager who has worked for 20 years in Dubai, shared, "The Kalayaan Ride is more than just an event—it’s a movement. We want younger Filipinos to see this as an example of how we can celebrate our roots, promote health, and foster a sense of belonging even far from home."

"We believe that Philippine Independence day is worth celebrating through our shared passion of cycling so our team 63.Mafia came up this idea or Kalayaan Ride. Our slogan: Unity Ride celebrating 127th Year of Philippine Independence and support  to the UAE’s theme - Year of Community for a healthy and stronger cycling community.

While the ride was predominantly Filipino, it also welcomed around 50 riders from other nationalities, showcasing the inclusivity and camaraderie that defines the UAE’s diverse sporting community.

Gutierrez added: "Organizing such event like Kalayaan Ride gave me a sense of pride and hope that Filipinos if united can do marvelous things and positive impact to community. More than ever, our people needs to unite, we hope that this event inspire others to find common ground."

Looking ahead, the team hopes to expand the Kalayaan Ride into a full-scale annual celebration, possibly incorporating other cycling disciplines and family-friendly activities. “This is just the beginning,” said Intal. “Next year, we hope to make it even bigger—reaching more OFWs, more families, and building bridges with other communities.”

As the sun rose over the desert and the cyclists crossed their final checkpoints, it was clear: the spirit of Filipino freedom is alive and riding strong in Dubai.
