Organ donation is the biggest gift one can give his or her fellow human being, said a celebrated cardiologist who has 16,000 heart surgeries to his credit.
Dr K.M. Cherian, a visiting Indian cardiologist, said that most people are reluctant to donate their organs. As human heart donors are not available frequently, he said, a lot of research is being done on implementing animal heart transplants.
Cherian was speaking after opening the cardiology department at the Middle East Specialised Medical Centre, a private hospital, in Abu Dhabi yesterday.
The occasion also marked the release of the first issue of the hospital's in-house magazine MESMC Health Watch.
The Chennai-based Indian doctor visits the Indian Specialist Medical Centre in Dubai once every three months and now permission has been sought from the Ministry of Health to allow him to see patients in Abu Dhabi, said Dr Azad Moopen, Chairman of the Middle East Specialised Medical Centre.
The newly opened department of cardiology at the Middle East Specialised Medical Centre is equipped with the latest facilities for the evaluation and management of out patients.
