New names for Dubai roads, streets

Casablanca...Algiers...Baghdad...Cairo....Damascus...these are just some of the exotic names that will grace Dubai's hitherto anonymous roads and streets.

The municipality will set about giving a new identity to the nameless roads following a local order issued by Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance and Industry and Chairman of Dubai Municipality, which will call them after prominent Arab world cities.

The local order will be applicable to all maps, drawings and related documents issued by the authorities in the emirate of Dubai.

Announcing this yesterday, Qasim Sultan, Director General of Dubai Municipality, said that a total of 21 streets were named after prominent Arab capitals and cities.

The streets and the names were picked on the basis of a study conducted by the Planning and Surveying Department at Dubai Municipality.

He said that the new move comes in line with the directives of the government to highlight the strong relations between the UAE and the brotherly Arab countries.

He noted that the roads from Al Ittihad Road to Al Hamriya Port was named 'Cairo' Road', while the road parallel to Dubai Airport in Al Towar is named 'Al Quds Road'.

The parallel road of Al Qusais Industrial Area and Abattoir which links Al Ahli club area to the Emirates Road has been named 'Amman'.

The road from Al Nahda Interchange to Emirates Road passing through the Higher Colleges of Technology for Women was named 'Baghdad', while the road from the main gate of Terminal 2 towards Sharjah passing through the abattoir was named 'Damascus'.

The road from Al Qusais Police Housing to the low-coast housing colony running parallel to Al Qusais Abattoir is named 'Halab', while the road from Rashidiya Interchange to Sharjah passing through Al Qusais Industrial area and Al towar 2 and 3 was named 'Beirut'.

The road from Emirates Road passing through Al Qusais Labour Camp and Al Muhaisina 1 and linked to Oud Metha was named 'Tunis', and the road linking Al Muhaisina 1 and Al Mizhar 1 to Al Warqa passing through Mirdif was named 'Algiers'.

'Tripoli' is the name given to the road stretch between Al Warqa, Mirdif and Mushrif Park, while the former Al Bustan Road has been renamed 'Casablanca'.

The road stretch between Al Ramoul and Al Garhoud was named 'Marakesh', and the road from Emirates Road passing through Rashidiya and Nad Al Hamr linking to Al Garhoud Bridge was named 'Rabat', while the road parallel to the Creekside Park is now 'Riyadh'.

The road from Al Zaabeel to Karama, Al Mankhoul and Al Refaa areas was named 'Kuwait', while the road stretch from Interchange No.1 to Bu Kidra Interchange was given the name of 'Doha'.

'Muscat' is the new name for the road from Interchange No. 2 on Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Quoz Residential Area and the racecourse at Nad Al Sheba, and 'Aden' will represent the road stretch that separates Ras Al Khour Industrial Area and Bu Kidra.

The road stretch between Ras Al Khour and Emirates Road which is located parallel to the Ras Al Khour Industrial Area with link to the Dubai-Al Ain Road is named 'Manama Road', while the middle road between Ras Al Khour Industrial area and the new Manama road will be called 'Sanaa'.
