Munching on a health hazard

Residents must be careful about consuming snacks and sandwiches prepared along the roadside as they attract dirt and bacteria

Last updated:

These days, people are focusing more on health issues and health-related problems that arise due to poor hygiene.

Therefore, I don't understand why most cafeterias around the city prepare shawarmas out in the open. I know of two such cafeterias operating in my building, where the employees prepare sandwiches by the roadside.

The astonishing part is that even well-informed residents do not mind eating food prepared in this manner. All it requires is our imagination to determine how many germs are capable of being present in the food. Is it worth it?

These sandwiches may contain an unimaginable amount of dirt, dust and germs simply because of the fact that these stalls operate along busy streets.

This is not only an issue of concern in Deira alone, but in most of the cafeterias operating in Dubai.

I feel that cafeteria owners should adopt some measures to control this issue. They should at least provide a glass cover or a shield to protect the meat from being exposed to bacteria, dust and invisible particles in the air which are harmful to our health.

As for the residents, tourists and customers, I believe people should not purchase food items which are open and prone to get spoilt easily.

Consuming snacks and sandwiches prepared in the open, along the main road, provides evidence of harm caused to the customers' health. People should be sensitive, careful and mature enough to decide upon what food is good for their health and what is not.

Lastly, I urge the concerned authorities to monitor such cafeterias and ensure they follow strict, hygiene policies.
