Ras Al Khaimah: A 37-year-old man was killed when a truck he was hitching a ride in slammed into a lamp post on Al Shuhada’a Road in Ras Al Khaimah on Sunday morning.

The driver of the vehicle escaped unharmed, said police.

Brigadier Hassan Ibrahim Ali, Deputy Director of Police Operations at Ras Al Khaimah Police, said police were alerted to the accident at 8am and responded to the scene.

Police investigation revealed that the 27-year-old driver lost control of his vehicle when a car overtook the truck from the wrong side.

The truck driver tried to avoid the collision with the speeding car, but instead he lost control over his truck, police said. The truck veered off the road and smashed into the lamp post.

The body of the victim was moved to the morgue of the hospital and eventually to his family for burial.

The case has been referred to authorities to determine next steps.

Brig. Ali urged motorists to abide by traffic rules and speed limits on the road.
