Legend of drama

Abu Dhabi Malayali Samajam honoured K.T. Mohammed, the legend of Malayalam drama, with this year's Malayalam Literary Award.

Many people believe that Malayalam drama is going through a lean period at present.
There was once a time when drama featured on the top of the entertainment calendar with appreciation from all social levels. The direct communication between artiste and audience cannot be replaced with any technological advancement or electronic gadget or audio-visual medium.

Kerala has a variety of traditional art forms. Mohammed has played an important part in the Malayalam drama scene by translating, initiating and improving the works staged. He has translated many plays from Tamil, Sanskrit and English into Malayalam. By experimenting with innovative ideas, Mohammed has enriched the drama scene. By learning from the works in other languages, he has created a variety in his own work.

He has shown immense talent, wisdom and creativity by writing and directing plays influenced by Shakespeare and in dealing with social, historical and political issues.

His work always has something new to offer because of his innovative approach. By putting across many social viewpoints to the audience through his plays, Mohammed has added a new dimension to this field.

A successful novelist and script writer for films as well, Mohammed won the first prize, with his short story Kannugal, in an international competition.
