Dubai: Exposure to the sun’s rays and Vitamin D deficiency were discussed by a top dermatologist, during the 13th edition of the Dubai World Dermatology and Laser Conference and Exhibition (DERMA), which began yesterday at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
Dr Anwar Al Hammadi, Consultant and Head of Dermatology at the Dubai Health Authority, said that many people use vitamin D deficiency as an excuse to expose their body to the sun for long hours which is a wrong practice.
“In cases of vitamin D deficiencies we have to look at the risks versus the benefits and here the risk is much higher than the benefits. If there is a vitamin D deficiency, patients can get it through supplements, injections and wise sun exposure. However, the person’s complexion should be taken into consideration.”
Al Hammadi stated that those with fair skin are advised not to stay in the sun for long because fair skin is more prone to skin cancer than those with a tanned complexion.
Artificial sun tanning beds should also be avoided and are even banned in some countries for those under 18 years old because it has been proven to induce skin cancer.
“To avoid the risk of unwise exposure to the sun, people should avoid the peak hours of sun exposure which is generally 10am to 3pm. I would also advise them to use sun screen and wear hats if they intend to go to the beach during peak hours,” Al Hammadi said.
He also added that fatigue, pain in joints, hairfall, etc, are some of the signs of low vitamin D and that regular tests should be undertaken to keep a check on vitamin D levels.
DERMA 2013, which is held under the patronage of Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance and President of the Dubai Health Authority, runs until April 18.
The exhibition will be attended by dermatologists from all over the world who will share the latest skin care trends, technologies and products through exhibitions, workshops and scientific sessions.
Eisa Al Maidour, Director General of the Dubai Health Authority, inaugurated the event and commented on Dubai’s bid to host the World Dermatology Congress in 2019.
“Dubai has proven itself in so many fields that include the health industry so with Dubai’s facilities and opportunities it has a good opportunity to win the bid to host the World Dermatology Congress in 2019.”
