Dubai: Giving someone a new lease on life through organ transplants was a decision that won the unanimous support of Gulf News readers.

They expressed their joy at the new organ donation law, as one of its main goals would be to help people in need.

Adel Yousuf Al Attar, an Emirati purchasing manager, commended the decision and said: "If it can save someone's life, then by all means [it is a great move]."

Nazeer Hussain, a Dubai resident, agreed. He added that stringent monitoring of procedures is necessary: "As long as Islamic laws are taken into consideration in this issue, it is a good move."

While organ donation is still a new concept in the UAE, Atta Khaleel, a finance manager based in Dubai, said it heralds a new era in health care.

"It's a revolutionary law, especially when [seen with] international laws. I am sure many people will come forward to make a contribution."

According to the National Kidney Foundation, a US-based voluntary nonprofit health organisation, an estimated 12,000 people who die each year meet the criteria for organ donation, but less than half of that number become actual organ donors.

The large gap is not surprising, according to C. S. Sagoo, a British national residing in Dubai.

He said: "In Eastern culture, people are generally reserved. Many are still not aware of the concept [of organ donations]. A lot has to be done to create awareness."

Those who are often hesitant to donate their organs usually have superficial reasons, according to Noorin Ansari, a Sharjah resident.

She said: "Some people may also be scared of how their bodies would be treated after death which is why they would not want to donate their organs."

"Personally, I think it is a very charitable and good deed..."

Have you ever been in need of an organ transplant? What happened? Do you think this announcement is a move in the right direction?
