Neuroendocrine tumour excised in a rare surgery

Dubai: In a first surgical procedure of its kind to be conducted in the UAE, a team of surgeons and specialists at Prime Hospital successfully performed a Hepatic Resection Surgery on a 52-year-old female patient who was admitted with a rare neuroendocrine tumour (NET).

A hepatic resection is a very complicated, technically challenging procedure as it involves the removal of a portion of the liver, pointed out health experts.

This is a high-risk surgery as the surgeons need to have a good understanding of the functional segments of the liver and excise the tumorous portion without damaging the hepatic artery, portal vein or biliary drain system.

In this case, the procedure lasted for a total of five hours. The patient was taken to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for a period of two days to monitor her health condition and ensure complete healing.

Dr Jamil Ahmad, managing director of Prime Hospital, emphasised that the patient was not exposed to any procedure-related complications and quickly recovered in the hospital’s ICU, praising the high professionalism by the medical staff and nursing, all of whom have proven themselves to be highly efficient in the completion of complex surgical procedures.
